چکیده
Here we present supplementary information for the article ”How perceived threat increases synchronization in collectively moving animal groups” in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. 1 Theoretical methods 1.1 Justification for asynchronous updating scheme Asynchronous updates are integral to our model. Consider a synchronous analogue of our model in which all individuals update at the same time but still choose the behavioural rule they follow at random. If p = 0.5 such a model will always result in symmetric distributions of individual speeds for long simulations. Such speed distributions do not have a positive skewness as observed in empirical data. Furthermore, adding a symmetric error or noise term to the desired movement of individuals in the model (as commonly done in the literature) will not result in positively skewed speed distributions for long simulations. However, if we relax the assumption that collectively

How perceived threat increases synchronization in collectively moving animal groups.
Nature is rich with many different examples of the cohesive motion of animals. Previous attempts to model collective motion have primarily focused on group behaviours of identical individuals. In contrast, we put our emphasis on modelling the contributions of different individual-level characteristics within such groups by using stochastic asynchronous updating of individual positions and orien...
متن کاملThe “Male Effect” Onestrous Synchronization and Reproductive Characteristics of Female Markhoz Goat during the Breeding Season
One hundred female Markhoz goats (42±5 kg) were used to investigate the ‘male effect’ on estrous synchronization and reproductive characteristics of female goat during the breeding season. This was carried out in three separate experiments. In the first experiment, forty female goats were used in 4 groups with different distance from the male goats (i.e. source of pheromone secretion); A1 (1 me...
متن کاملContextual Sources of Perceived Group Threat: Negative Immigration-Related News Reports, Immigrant Group Size and their Interaction, Spain 1996–2007
This study attempts to further our understanding of the contextual sources of anti-immigrant sentiments by simultaneously examining the impact of immigrant group size, negative immigration-related news reports and their interaction on natives’ perceived group threat. We test our theoretical assumptions using repeated cross-sectional survey data from Spain during the time period 1996–2007, enric...
متن کاملStriving for group agency: threat to personal control increases the attractiveness of agentic groups
When their sense of personal control is threatened people try to restore perceived control through the social self. We propose that it is the perceived agency of ingroups that provides the self with a sense of control. In three experiments, we for the first time tested the hypothesis that threat to personal control increases the attractiveness of being part or joining those groups that are perc...
متن کاملGaussian Process Segmentation of Co-Moving Animals
The analysis of how groups of animals move collectively is the focus of much current research. This paper offers a Bayesian model of animal co-movement based on a mixture of Gaussian processes.
